Name of Assignment: Community Engagement
Subject: Community Engagement
Facilitator/Teacher: Mr. Wade
For this class, we were asked to volunteer at a non profit organization of our choice, and to write down our volunteer hours in a log. For my volunteer hours, I tutored 1st graders, and volunteered with the nonprofit organization, Maui Onstage.
I associate this project with Civic Literacy and Engagement because I had to demonstrate my ability to work in the community.
I ’m proud that I got to help out in the community, and that I got to have experiences that I feel will help me in the real world.
Beforehand, I would only volunteer in the community if my parents were helping out, so I feel that through doing this class, I have started wanting to volunteer on my own.
The most difficult part was setting up zoom meetings and times to tutor the 1st graders since sometimes they would come in for sessions and sometimes they were online.
I would probably try to find a way to volunteer after school hours, as sometimes my tutoring would overlap with lunch (although one time it was a class).
In the past, I’ve learnt that it’s good to help out in the community, and that it’s a rewarding experience when you see the looks on people’s faces.
In the future, I definitely want to continue volunteering and engaging in the community. Maybe not a full time volunteer, but at least a part time one.
