For this assignment, the class was paired into a group of four, and we were all handed folders that had newspaper headlines, photos, and dates from the late 1950’s to the early 1960’s. The assignment was to decipher what was the threat to the United States of America based on the materials we were given. The conclusion was that Cuba had allied itself with the USSR, and that the threat to the United States was that the USSR’s power had ended up close to American territory. After understanding what the threat to the United States was, our group was given the role of President John F. Kennedy’s executive committee, and we had to propose a solution to the threat. After weighing out both the positive and negative consequences, we then had to write a letter to the president saying what our solution was, and why it was the best course of action.
The 21st Century Skill that I associate with this project is Communication Skills. My group, and I had to communicate with each other, and decipher together what the threat to the United States was, and together we had to make a consecutive decision on what to do. When writing a letter to the president about our solution to the crisis, all of us worked together to write out what our idea was, and why it was the best course of action compared to the other solutions we were given.
I’m proud that me and my group members worked well together, and that we were able to decipher what the threat to the United States was. Before the assignment, we weren’t given any information on the Cuban Missile Crisis, and through this project, we were able to learn about what events lead up to the Cuban Missile Crisis, and what the outcome was. After we completed the assignment, I was very happy to learn that our group had chosen the solution that was used in this crisis, where the United States pulled their missiles out of Turkey and Italy, and the U.S.S.R. pulled their weapons and forces out of Cuba.
Something that I could’ve improved on was my writing skills. In the beginning, my group took lots of time and care to explain why our solution was the best course of action. By the end of the class, we were rushing in order to finish, and we might have lost our formal tone in our letter. We also didn’t sign the letter off in a formal way, so next time, I could take the time to sign the letter off.
