For this project, my class was grouped into teams of three, and we each had to choose a project that involved a solution to climate change based off the website, Project Drawdown. Originally, my team was going to focus on Wetland Conservation, however, one of my fellow Red Cross club members had to drop out of a project that the club was doing with the nonprofit organization, CCR, and their Call to Action project. I stepped up to take their spot, and my team's project was redirected to making a video that focused on microplastics and how dangerous they are to the environment. To make sure that it fit with the theme of our field ecology project, my team and I made sure to add a segment at the end, that talks about the cost benefits of cutting plastic out of our lives, and we've also done multiple outings to the beach behind the Maui Beach Hotel, where we've discovered lots of microplastics.
The 21st Century Skill that I associate with this project is Interpersonal Skills. I had to hold team meetings with my group mates in order to discuss our plan of action. It wasn't the easiest, as most of the time I felt like I was the only one doing work, but I still exhibited patience with my group members, and gave them small tasks to do in order to maintain their focus.
I'm proud of this project because it challenged my organizational skills, as I had to make sure the project stayed on track. In order to do that, I planned and organized the outings for my group's project and coordinated that with the field ecology teacher.
The most difficult part about this project was keeping my group members on task. I had to remind them multiple times what their tasks were and redirect them when they got off topic. My teacher noticed this, and asked them to do research on how much money is saved by eliminating plastic from people's lives. I still had to keep them on task. It was a challenge, but I feel I grew as a leader from the experience, and we were able to complete the project.
